It may be early in the game to play the holocaust card, but in a desperate effort to hold onto the radical Right, Benjamin Netanyahu took a page out of history, erased all evidence of accuracy and rewrote a version palatable only to the most rabid of rabbis. So consumed with the need to remain in power, Netanyahu is willing to give Adolph Hitler a pass on being the architect of the Holocaust.
In order to cast the Palestinians in the worst light possible to date, Netanyahu told the World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem that it was the Palestinians who gave Hitler the idea of exterminating the Jews. Without a shred of proof to back up the outrageous claim, the distressed leader went on to relate a farfetched tale of a meeting between Haj Amin al-Husseini, (the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem) at the time and Adolph Hitler himself where the Nazi maniac sought Husseini’s advice on what to do with his Jewish problem.
According to Netanyahu, Hitler only wanted to expel the Jews from Germany, but Husseini convinced Hitler to burn them, because they’d only come to Palestine. According to Benjamin Netanyahu, if only those two men had never met, Adolph Hitler would have come up with a more humane solution than his Final Solution. According to Netanyahu’s version of events, were it not for Palestinian influence, six million Jews could have been spared. Facts be damned, that’s what Netanyahu said.
The fact that Adolph Hitler published Mein Kamph in July of 1925, years before he met with Husseini will have to be discounted in order for Netanyahu’s version of history to make sense. The fact that 33,771 Jew were slaughtered in Babi Yar in the fall of 1941, months before Hitler met with Husseini must be dismissed in order to give Netayahu’s account of history any credence. The fact that the Palestinians have a well documented history of the opposing the nazis, as thousands gave their lives fighting alongside Allied Forces must also be ignored.
According to Saeb Erekat, chairment of the PLO executive committee said “It’s a sad day when the leader of the Israeli government hates his neighbors so much that he is willing to absolve the most notorious war criminal in history, Adolph Hitler, of the murder of 6 millions Jews during the Holocaust. Mr Netanyahu should stop using this human tragedy to score points for his political end.
According to Israel’s Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog, ” This is a dangerous historical distortion and I demand Netanyahu correct it immediately as it minimizes the Holocaust, Nazism and Hitler’s part in our people’s history. Zionist Union MK Itzik Shmuli demanded Netanyahu apologize to Holocaust victims, saying “This is a great shame, a prime minister of the Jewish state at the service of Holocaust-deniers. This is a first, he stated. ‘This isn’t the first time Netanyahu distorts historical facts, but a lie of this magnitude is the first.
Bottom line: Lacking the wit, will or political skill to manage his precariously weak coalition government, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has scarcely if any options left but aligning himself with the extreme right. If it takes a few incendiary lies to keep the hottest heads in line, at least they’ll buy a little more time, while hoping the current state of violent unrest subsides on its own.
